Simply put, a podcast is an audio file (usually mp3) or video file that you download fully automatically onto your portable media player thanks to something called a "feed" or "RSS feed".
Once it is downloaded you can then listen to or watch the podcast whenever and wherever you like. If you don't have a portable media player, you can still listen to most podcasts just by clicking on a link to the mp3 file on the podcast's website.
